Sensitive Skin Selection: Choosing the Right Wash for Delicate Skin

Prioritize the skin in your most sensitive areas

We know we should be careful choosing cleansers for our face, but many of us don’t consider what we should use on the delicate skin of our vulvas. Choosing a wash that is made for sensitive skin is ideal for minimizing irritation, lowering the risk of allergic reactions, and reducing dryness.

Choosing the right cleanser also preps your skin for other products such as moisturizers. If your skin is clean, it can absorb the moisturizer, help it work more effectively, and assist your skin in staying balanced and healthy. It can be nerve-wracking to choose a new product, especially if you have had any kind of reaction to skincare products in the past. Luckily, we are here to help.

So, what’s the best place to start? Start by picking a mild formula with vulva-friendly ingredients!

Choose a gentle cleanser

When you have sensitive skin, one of the risks of using a traditional cleanser or soap is that it can strip your skin of moisture, which can potentially mean a higher chance of infection. Although the vagina is self-cleaning, the vulva is not! Experts recommend cleansing your vulva once a day with warm water and a gentle, balanced intimate wash to keep the whole area healthy.

Whether you want to clean up after an intense workout, wash off lubricants or bodily fluids after intimacy, or freshen up during your menstrual cycle, a gentle cleanser that has been formulated specifically for your vulva is the way to go.

Avoid harsh ingredients

Sure, it makes sense to choose a gentle option. But what makes something not-so-gentle? Artificial scents, alcohol, and allergens are a few things at the top of the list of things to avoid. Body washes and soaps that are just fine for the rest of your body don’t necessarily work for the more sensitive skin on your vulva, just like your face.

In general, the best rule of thumb is to choose a product that is as natural as possible, which includes as few irritants as possible. Need examples of ingredients to stay away from? Parabens, sulfates, dyes and other synthetic preservatives are just a few. Any of these can disrupt the pH balance of your vulva and cause irritation.

Patch test new products

If you have particularly sensitive skin or have had reactions to skincare products in the past, dermatologists recommend patch testing new products. To do so, apply a small amount of a new cleanser to the skin and leave for a few moments, or about as long as it would normally stay on your skin, before rinsing. Repeat several times over the course of a few days to see if any reaction occurs. If it does, wash it off right away and apply a cool compress.

Why a specific vulva wash?

Your vulva is an incredible, yet delicate, powerhouse. It plays an integral role in your health and overall wellbeing and is the carefully balanced home to trillions of healthy bacteria. Exercise, sexual activity, hormonal changes and more can all cause irritation, dryness and inflammation. A cleanser made without parabens, sulfates or artificial fragrances ensures everything will stay healthy and calm downstairs.
